His love is forever idealised and never put to the test of a life and marriage. His friends, though, live in the real world in real marriages with real problems and real fears. Putting these two, perhaps incompatible, worlds together makes for a rich exploration of the English traits of complex social manners, the terror of not knowing what to say and the delicious humour of awkwardness.
